2018 Youth Symphony Concerto Competition
The competition is open to all members of Youth Symphony, regardless of grade in school, including 2018 Spring-only members who have been admitted by prior audition. The winner of the competition will perform, accompanied by the Youth Symphony orchestra, during the Youth Symphony Spring concert on April 27, 2018.
Those competing will audition on Sunday evening, January 7th, 2018, starting at 3 PM. Students should be accompanied by piano, and are responsible for arranging for the accompanist. Warm-up times may be scheduled at Youth Music Illinois on Sunday afternoon by advance communications.
Guest judges will be professional musicians. Their decision will determine the outcome, and the results will be announced after a short pause following the conclusion of the competition. All contestants, by participating, agree to accept the judges’ decision as final. The auditions will be open to the public, and take place in the Great Room at the Life Together Center.
CONCERTO REPERTOIRE CHOICE
All competition pieces must have been composed (or transcribed) for the student’s instrument, as a solo accompanied by orchestra. The piece does not have to have the designation of “Concerto” in its title. Single movements or short works may be performed in their entirety – works or movements longer than 12 minutes will require special approval or possible cuts to shorten their duration.
The choice of repertoire for the competition must be included in the application, and the Music Director must approve the piece. The reason for the approval is to ensure that the competition piece can be acquired by Youth Music Illinois, and can be performed by the orchestra. Possible reasons to withhold approval include:
- Technical and/or musical difficulty of the orchestral parts
- Difficulty in obtaining orchestra parts (for logistical reasons, or due to prohibitive rental or purchase costs)
- Size of orchestra required
The Music Director will approve or disapprove choice of repertoire within a week of receiving applications, so that students and their teachers know the choice is confirmed, or have time to consider alternative repertoire.
